I currently live in the Pacific Northwest, a place where the trees are forever green and the water is tainted with sarcasm. I am a daughter, granddaughter, cousin, and sister - not necessarily in that order. I have a tendency to overanalyze and over-emphasize. For example, why am I writing this? Who is going to read it? Why would anyone want to read it? See, I’m doing it now. If you'd like to know more about me submit a question! Maybe, just maybe it will magically appear in this blurb with an answer.

I’m Satan and You’re a Minion

I try not to promote too many things on The Word Wide Web, because I find it annoying when I am at other blogs and am bombarded with 666 advertisements promoting some product I have absolutely no interest in. Anyone pick up on the 666 reference? That’s right, advertisements come from the devil. In the words of writer Rita Mae Brown, “Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself.” Indeed, all one has to do is search Google for words like sex, drugs, and rock and roll and your well on your way to being kicked firmly out of the Garden of Eden. (BTW, I’m not a religious person, but I do have a fair bit of fun using religious references in things I write - which you’ll discover if you hang out at The Word Wide Web long enough. But, you never know, I’m only 26 - there’s time for me to be saved.) Advertisements are like forwarded emails. They’d better be *&^%&#@ funny or important (i.e. Jack Handy quotes, or a message from the U.S. President warning me of a national crisis) for you to be using 2 minutes of my time. 2 minutes a day for 20 forwarded emails is 40 minutes a day. That means bad forwards waste about 14,560 minutes annually. Yikes! So let me not waste your time any longer with this very wordy preface.

Former Editor of Gamespot, Jeff Gerstmann, and his good friend Ryan Davis have started a new game blog called “Giant Bomb” which they hope to turn into a larger gaming website. Most of the people that belong or once belonged (like me) to the Gamespot community are aware of this development. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Jeff and Ryan - they’re quite the pair. I enjoy Jeff and Ryan because they are sarcastic, diabolically creative video game enthusiasts. Trust me, I wouldn’t be telling you to go check their new blog out if I thought I could potentially be a part of your 14,560 wasted minutes! Go gamers! Go now and enjoy yourself! Then come back here and thank me! :)

  1. I’m not sure about Giant Bomb just yet.

If Giant Bomb were GameSpot without the stealth advertorials and the alleged questionable relationship between marketing and editorial, I would be on board, but it isn’t, so I’m not.

Jeff Gerstmann’s recent praise of video game blogs such as Destructoid and Kotaku has me concerned. The blogs regulary beat the major video game Web sites to the news, but it’s because the blogs don’t fact check. I like getting my video game coverage sooner rather than later, but I don’t want to have to question if it’s accurate. Corrections are too common in the blogs for me to take them seriously.

Not to mention that the blogs insert speculation and opinion in inappropriate places. I don’t want someone telling me in a news story that I should hate Jack Thompson. I can come up with my own opinion of the man based on what I read about him.

The lack of industry news on Giant Bomb is also troubling. While getting your news entirely from one source is not a good thing, I still want a site that covers everything.

I have been looking for a new primary video game Web site ever since GameSpot ruined itself. I was hoping for some time that it would be Jeff Gerstmann’s then rumored, upcoming site. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Giant Bomb will be it.

  2. I largely agree with you. I don’t want to get news from a site that is entirely opinion oriented. However, I also don’t think this is where Gerstmann or Davis intend to go with their creation. I am trying to view Giant Bomb as the prequel.

Jeff and Ryan are giant children. (Which is probably why the site is called Giant Bomb.) Its like playing with a Jack-In-The-Box. They got tired of spinning the handle and waiting for the clown to pop out of the box so they pried the lid open and let the clown out themselves.

Furthermore, Gerstmann is a very prominent figure in the internet gaming community. He once had access to everything gaming worthy by Gamespot default. I think he will have difficulty getting those same privileges launching independently, but he will have a much easier time getting access to the latest news than, say, me. I think we can expect to see a great deal more from Giant Bomb in the future.
