Films For Your Consideration

filmscon.jpgAlmost everyone I know enjoys a good film - which goes without saying because who enjoys a bad film?

I’ve probably seen more movies than my parents have in their entire lifetimes. For the record, they watch movies on a pretty regular basis. This is not to say that seeing more films than my parents qualifies me to make better recommendations. I will say that I’ve seen so many films that I can predict most plot lines with effortless precision. As a result, Hollywood has lost a great deal of its magic for me (not even Harry Houdini could resurrect the escapism movies once provided for me).

I’m inclined to believe that my awareness of plot and my scrutiny of its delivery are characteristics of a film critic. And as we all know, film critics aren’t real people - they’re mutants (also known as X-Men). Did you know that Ebert and Roeper have larger thumbs than the average person? Hence, the “two thumbs up” slogan. Apparently, having gigantic thumbs also accounts for why their opinion means more than yours does.

Sadly, I don’t have large thumbs. But, I do have a blog and I can make lists. Does anyone remember the old television show “Reading Rainbow” with LeVar Burton? The following is a list of films I highly recommend, “but you don’t have to take my word for it.” (Disclaimer: Most of the films on this list require viewer participation in order to be appreciated. For example, thinking about character dialogue will enhance your perception of the film . They’re generally not “feel good” movies. They’re movies which defy and question the status quo.)
